Out of Nothing Came Something
At the heart of the creative act is, one could say, nothing. Nothing other than the impulse to create, to bring into being something that has not yet previously existed. Exploring that trajectory – from nothingness or pure consciousness or Being itself to a created something, to a visual image, to Life itself – lies at the heart of Patrick Bryson’s artwork. It is the path from Being to Becoming. Through making images, Bryson engages with the very essence of what it means to live in a world that comes from nothing and is resplendent with everything.
Bryson works digitally in order to focus exclusively on the image itself. Freed in this way from dealing with materials and their processes, he is able to attend only to the new image that is emerging as shapes and color align themselves.
Bryson’s digital artwork vibrates with energy, dynamism, and exuberance. At the same time there is an eternal quality to his basic shapes and reduced palette of colors—a stillness which lies at the heart of the creative process.
